Explore a detail, follow an interpretation, or read the complete study.
Explore the painting
Select a numbered marker on the painting, or choose a subject from “Explore the details”. Use Previous and Next to move through all ten details. Overview returns to the introduction.
Each detail includes a short explanation. Open “Read the original study notes” for the fuller interpretation, references and original annotated image. “Show details” hides or reveals the markers.
Read the essays
The study contents list takes you to every section. On a small screen, open “Study contents” to see the list. At the end of each essay, use the Previous and Next links to continue reading.
Images and notes
Select an underlined artwork title to open its image. Use Close or press Escape to return. Numbered note links open the corresponding note beneath the essay. Notes remain open until you close them.
Keyboard and text size
Use Tab to move between links and controls, Enter to follow a link, and Enter or Space to activate a button or open a study note. The skip link at the top of each page moves directly to its main content. You can enlarge text using your browser’s zoom controls.

About the content
The original study is by Oliver Thiebaud for The Art & Architectural Trust. The short introductory explanations are new to this edition. Original essays and notes are retained for review. Some historical dates, titles, citations and contact details may need updating.
